India’s largest brokerage, Zerodha, said on Tuesday, September 26, that its topline expanded by nearly 38% to Rs 6,875 crore ($825 million) in the year ended March 31, 2023. Profit after tax increased by 39% to Rs 2,907 crore ($349 million).

It logged faster revenue growth than rival Angel One, whose topline rose by 32% to Rs 3,000 crore and net profits improved by 43% during the same period. Profit margin was 39%.

Zerodha’s net profit margin stood at 42%. The company said its profit margin, calculated as profit before taxes divided by revenues, hovered higher at 70%. However, it excluded the fee it collects from customers and shares with stock exchanges. This fee, known as ‘pass-through exchange transaction charges’, constitutes 25% of its income.

The company released a business update on its website. Overall, it maintained a profit margin of 54-56% from FY20 to FY22, according to financials reviewed by The Arc.

A margin of 70% would make Zerodha one of the most profitable businesses in India. The National Stock Exchange, the country’s biggest bourse, has a consolidated net profit margin of 58%.

The company has delivered solid numbers despite increasing competition from Angel One and Groww. The race is to capture more active users who trade at least once a year.

Zerodha’s market share of active users lept from 4% in 2017 to 20-22% in 2021. Groww has 6.2 million total active users, and it is expected to overtake Zerodha’s base of 6.3 million this month, The Economic Times reported recently.

Co-founder and CEO Nithin Kamath said futures &amp; options trading remained the company’s biggest revenue driver and the biggest risk. He wrote in the business update that “any regulation or change in market conditions or newer competitors with better products can reduce retail trading activity in F&amp;O at Zerodha”. Nevertheless, he assured that the&nbsp;company was prepared to adapt. 

New platforms like Market Pulse and Aaratya are raising funding after seeing the large profit pool built by Zerodha. They are looking to design a mobile-first interface for trading.

Citing the financial figures, Kamath said Zerodha’s valuation would be pegged at about $3.6 billion based on a profit-after-tax multiple of 10-15 times. This is 80% higher than the $2-billion valuation he mentioned in 2021. Groww and Upstox were last assigned price tags of $3 billion and $3.4 billion, respectively.
